Abstract

Objectives: The study was conducted with an aim to explore and identify the incidence of malignancy in females with breast lumps attending OPDs and surgical clinics in district Bannu, KPK Pakistan.
Study Design: It was a descriptive/ observational and cross sectional study.
Place and Duration of the Study: The study was conducted in 7 major private surgical clinics and two leading teaching hospital’s OPDs of district Bannu from July 2016 to October 2016.
Methodology: Female patients having an age above 16 years and presenting for the first time with breast lump to surgical clinics and hospital’s OPD were included in the study. FNAC was conceded out in all of these patients before conducting surgical procedures and they were called for follow up with histopathology report. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 13 and all the results were presented in various forms including frequencies, tables and percentages of variables.
Results: A total of 250 female patients affected from breast lump were included. The patients were grouped according to difference age. 60% (n=150) were patients with age of 18-36 years, 25% (n=62) were between age 36-50 and rest of the 15% patients (n=37) were above 50 years. The results of our study showed that 39% (n=97) of the patients had malignant carcinoma of the breast. Fibroadenoma (commonest lesion on FNAC report) was observed in 32% (n=80) and 18% (n=45) patients had breast abscesses. 11% (n=28) had fibrocystic disease based on FNAC findings.
The most common patients who suffered from carcinoma were in between 26-35 years of age whereas fibro adenoma was found in females of younger age i.e. age between 16-25 years.
Conclusion: From this study, it is concluded that the frequency of breast cancer is increased in younger aged females. We suggest the establishment of clinics having breast screening programmes so that the pathologies involved can be diagnosed at an early stage. We recommend that surgeons should remain vigilant while managing patient’s with age above 30 years and having breast lump so that breast malignancy can be identified and managed at earlier stage.
